In a landmark achievement for China’s maritime industry, the first domestically built large cruise ship, the Adora Magic City, has been officially handed over to its operator, Adora Cruises. This significant development, as reported by China Media Group (CMG), marks a new era in China’s capabilities in shipbuilding.

Decade-Long Journey to Completion

The Adora Magic City’s journey to completion is a testament to China’s dedication and expertise in shipbuilding. With eight years dedicated to research and an additional five years for design and construction, the ship was ceremoniously named and delivered in Shanghai last month. This milestone was followed by the installation and verification of shipboard equipment, including artworks, hotel supplies, and medical equipment, ensuring that the vessel is fully equipped for its future voyages.

Trial Operations

In anticipation of its maiden voyage, the Adora Magic City has welcomed a diverse crew of 1,292 members from various parts of the world. These crew members are integral to the ship’s preparation for trial operations. The vessel will soon make its way to the Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal in Shanghai, signaling the start of its operational phase.

Once it arrives in Shanghai, the Adora Magic City is scheduled to embark on a test voyage. This crucial phase, as explained by Guo Jia, the director of business development at Adora Cruises, involves simulating a real cruise experience. It includes comprehensive tests ranging from maritime management to guest services, ensuring that every aspect of the cruise experience meets the highest standards.

Future Cruise Plans and Expansion

The future operational plans for the Adora Magic City are ambitious. According to Guo, the ship will initially offer international cruise routes from Shanghai to various sought-after tourist destinations in Northeast Asia. These routes are not just limited to the immediate region; plans are in place to expand these offerings to include destinations in Southeast Asia and countries that are part of the Belt and Road initiative. This expansion strategy reflects China’s growing influence in the global cruise market.

The engineering and design of the Adora Magic City are nothing short of remarkable. Spanning 323.6 meters in length and standing 72.2 meters high, the ship has a gross weight of 135,500 tonnes. It is designed to accommodate a maximum of 5,246 passengers in its 2,125 guest rooms, making it one of the largest cruise ships in the world. The ship’s size and capacity demonstrate China’s advanced capabilities in modern shipbuilding and design.
