The Coast Guard is responded to a tug boat that ran aground Thursday in Boca Raton.
Coast Guard Station Fort Lauderdale and Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations crews rescued four people from the havoc.
An emergency call was sent out by the crew of Sea Eagle requesting urgent help on Thursday at about 8:45 pm. CBP arrived on the scene and escorted three people from the barge. Station Fort Lauderdale’s crew rescued the Sea Eagle’s captain, who stayed behind with the tug. The crew was reunited on the Station Fort Lauderdale’s vessel.
With no reported injuries, the trouble arrives with the 10,000 gallons of diesel fuel that lies on board and can turn into an environmental hazard.
The vessels are operated by NOSAT, Northcliffe Ocean Shipping & Trading, which is currently working with a salvage company to safely remove them and tow them to a nearby port.
The Coast Guard has put in place a 1,000-foot safety zone and is safely clearing the barge of any potential munitions or ordnance. Shoreside beach access and physical security are being maintained by Deerfield Beach, Boca Raton, and Broward County Sheriff’s office.
The cause of the grounding is under investigation.
