U.S. Navy Launches New Attack Submarine USS Idaho (SSN 799)

In a significant milestone for the U.S. Navy’s submarine fleet, the future USS Idaho (SSN 799) was launched from General Dynamics Electric Boat’s shipyard into the Thames River on August 6, 2024. This event, commonly referred to as “float off,” marks a crucial phase in the submarine’s construction, transitioning it from the shipyard facilities to the water for the first time. This stage sets the vessel on its path towards final outfitting, rigorous testing, and crew certification.

Captain Mike Hollenbach, Virginia Class Submarine Program Manager, emphasized the importance of this achievement, stating, “Today’s launch is testament to the strong collaboration the Navy has with its shipbuilding partners. Idaho will be a valuable national asset and source of pride for our Sailors, the shipbuilders, and all Americans for years to come.”

The USS Idaho, the 26th Virginia-class fast-attack submarine, represents a significant advancement in naval technology. Construction of the submarine began in 2017, and it is the fifth U.S. Navy vessel to bear the Idaho name. The previous USS Idaho was a battleship (BB 42), commissioned in 1919. The submarine was christened by its sponsor, Terry Stackley, on March 16, 2024, using water collected from various lakes in Idaho—a symbolic gesture reflecting the state’s connection to the vessel.

Virginia-class submarines are pivotal to maintaining the U.S. Navy’s undersea dominance. These fast-attack submarines boast enhanced stealth, advanced surveillance capabilities, and specialized warfare enhancements, making them versatile assets for multi-mission operations. Designed with modular construction, open architecture, and commercial off-the-shelf components, the Virginia class is engineered for longevity, allowing for the rapid integration of new technologies and payloads throughout its operational life.
