China calls the US warship sailing in Taiwan Strait ‘provocative.’

On Saturday, the Chinese administration found a US warship sailing through the sensitive Taiwan Strait.

The US described that it’s Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Ralph Johnson was conducting ‘routine’ transit through international waters. The US Navy’s 7th Fleet’s spokesperson Nicholas Lingo stated that the ship traversing through the Taiwan strait demonstrates the US commitment to a free and open indo-pacific.
However, The Eastern Theatre Command of China’s People’s Liberation Army, who monitored the passage, called it a “provocative act.”

Currently, Taiwan is in a heightened state of alert. It isn’t unusual that the Chinese government may try to take advantage of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and make a move on the island.
Over the past two years, China has mounted repeated air force missions into Taiwan’s air defence identification zone (ADIZ), claiming the democratically ruled island as its territory. This has provoked anger in Taipei.

This Saturday, Taiwan’s Defence Ministry reported that eight Chinese aircraft flew into its ADIZ.
With its relations to Washington, Beijing calls the issue of Taiwan to be a sensitive and significant one.
Taiwan is the US’ most important international backer and arms supplier. However, just like other countries, the US has no formal diplomatic ties.
