On Saturday, The Algonova, a twofold hulled oil and chemical freighter, was stranded in the ice close to Marine City. A Canadian cutter went for its rescue, cutting a way for the tanker, and was joined by a U.S. Coast Guard cutter.

The cutters are a special-purpose ship designed to move and navigate through ice-covered waters and provide safe waterways to the vessels. The Canadian cutter did a great part of the work. Not long after the U.S. cutter’s arrival, The Algonova was set free and sailing again at about 2:25 p.m. The local inhabitants watched the salvage from the shore.

The Algonova, owned by Algoma Tankers Limited, was sent off in 2008 and services ports on the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence Seaway, and in Atlantic Canada.

The name Algonova is derived from the standard organization prefix “Algo” and “nova” respecting the region of Nova Scotia, the home region of Imperial Oil’s large filling and distribution center, Dartmouth.
